Palliative care is aimed at relieving the suffering of serious illness and improving quality of life for people at any stage of the disease; whether that illness is curable, serious, or life threatening. Palliative care is a unique care provided by a team of doctors, nurses, social workers and spiritual counselors who provide palliation and healthcare support for people. This type of care focuses on treating the symptoms of disease, while allowing the patient to concurrently seek curative treatment if they so desire.
Meet with and solicit advice from department supervisors concerning the assessment and care plan functions. The primary purpose of the Shift Supervisor position is to supervise the nursing activities and facility operations to assure resident safety for the whole facility for one shift. Communicates with the medical staff, nursing personnel and other department supervisors. Ensure that a complete assessment is conducted within fourteen days of a significant change in the resident’s condition. Ensure that quarterly and annual MDS and care plan reviews are completed per the schedule in the RAI Manual. Ensure that an initial resident assessment is completed within fourteen days of the resident’s admission.
Review medication orders for completeness of information, accuracy in the transcription of physician orders, and adherence to stop order policies. Monitor medication passes and treatment schedules to ensure that medications are being administered as ordered and that treatments are provided as scheduled. Ensure that reference materials (i.e. PDR’s, Federal and State Regulations, etc.) are maintained at the nurses’ station and are kept current.
Ensure that departmental disciplinary action is administered fairly and in compliance with established disciplinary procedures. Ensure that a sufficient number of qualified RNs, LPNs and CNAs are available to ensure quality care is delivered. Respond to reports of resident, employee and/or visitor accidents, incidents or unusual circumstances. Ensure that appropriate documentation is made and that the initial investigation is completed and reported to appropriate persons.

Participate in developing, maintaining and updating written policies and procedures that govern day-to-day functions of the nursing department. Obtain a written record of the resident’s complaints and/or grievances that indicates the action taken to resolve the complaint or the current status of the complaint. Review complaints and grievances made by the resident and make a written/oral report to the DON indicating what action were taken to resolve the complaint or grievance. Assist the Director of Nursing Services and relevant supervisors in ensuring that all personnel providing direct care to the resident are aware of the plan of care and that they refer to the care plan prior to administering daily care.
